How Tuck Executive Education’s Personal, Connected Approach Transforms Leaders

For today’s senior leaders, effective leadership isn’t a knowledge problem; it’s an execution problem. Executives are overloaded with information, yet often lack the frameworks and practice they need to deliver results under pressure.

The solution to this paradox, according to Alva Taylor, senior associate dean for executive learning at Tuck, can’t be found in a search engine, a business book, or even a lecture hall. It doesn’t come from taking in more ideas, but from putting them into practice.

We sat down with Taylor to learn how Tuck Executive Education’s (TEE) unique approach gives executives the chance to do just that, and about his ultimate measure of success: leaders who are wiser and more decisive upon their return to their organizations.

How would you describe Tuck’s core executive learning philosophy?

Our philosophy is personal, connected, and transformative. While that may sound like jargon, we genuinely live and breathe it.

It’s personal because we want each person, wherever they are in their journey, to get exactly what they need out of the program. It’s connected because we build a strong community—not just among the executives, but outside the classroom with our professors, staff, and students. And it’s transformative because we focus on impact. You’re going to leave here having an impactful experience and a clear return on investment. You will be a better leader and decision-maker with new capabilities.

How does TEE ensure that its programs are both academically rigorous and immediately applicable?

Tuck is known in the business world for pairing world-class academic research with real-world applicability, and we bring that rigor to executive learning. Our professors have clear, deep, real-world experience.

But when you come to a TEE program, you’re not going to sit back and listen. We build exercises and practice into the programs so that you have tried the methods we teach, seen where you fall short, and know what you need to build on. You can even walk your team through the same exercises when you go back to work.

“People often underestimate the value of getting away from the day-to-day activity … Tuck is almost a sanctuary of learning and development. You get this once-in-a-lifetime experience, where you focus on building yourself personally and on how you can help your organization, without any distractions.”
—Alva Taylor, Senior Associate Dean for Executive Learning

What kind of impact do alumni see after completing a program?

If you talk to any of our alumni, from entrepreneurs to senior corporate executives, they will tell you that coming to Tuck was one of the most important and transformational aspects of their journey.

Entrepreneurs talk about how they now run their companies differently, make better decisions, and hire better people. Executives talk about how it springboarded them to a new level where they really understand how to create value and strategically position their organizations for the future.

How does Tuck’s location in Hanover shape the experience?

People often underestimate the value of getting away from the day-to-day activity—the phone calls, the traffic, all the influences. Tuck is almost a sanctuary of learning and development. You get this once-in-a-lifetime experience, where you focus on building yourself personally and on how you can help your organization, without any distractions.

How would you sum up the TEE difference?

TEE is one of the longest-running executive education programs in the world. We’ve been doing this for a long time, and we understand what it means to educate. We understand what it means to transform.

We’re always asking the big questions: How can Tuck provide real impact? How can we meet you where you are and provide what you need? How can we connect you to a community that will help you not only now but for years to come? How can we ensure that participants leave our programs as better, stronger, wiser leaders?

We do that better—and we focus on that more—than any school in the country, and I’m willing to hang my hat on that.
